Parts and Components of a Flexible Feeder System

A complete flexible feeder system is an integrated mechatronic device consisting of the following key functional modules and components:

I. Core Vibration and Handling Module

  1. Vibratory Platform/Feeder Base: Generates micro-amplitude, multi-axis vibration to scatter parts.

  2. Flexible Feeding Tray/Plate: The removable surface placed on the vibratory platform.

    • Pin Tray: With an array of pins to stabilize parts.

    • Textured/Coated Tray: Surface with a specific friction coefficient.

    • Magnetic Tray: For ferromagnetic parts.

  3. Platform Controller: Adjusts vibration frequency, amplitude, and mode.

II. Vision Recognition Module

  1. Industrial Camera: Typically a high-resolution area scan camera.

  2. Industrial Lens: Selected based on field of view and accuracy requirements.

  3. Lighting System: Critical for highlighting part features.

    • Ring Light, Bar Light, Dome Light, Coaxial Light, etc.

    • Light Controller: For adjusting intensity and strobe.

  4. Vision Processor: Industrial PC or embedded vision system.

  5. Vision Software: Core algorithm for part recognition, location, and coordinate calculation.

III. Robot Picking Module

  1. Industrial Robot: Typically a 6-axis or SCARA robot.

  2. Robot End-Effector:

    • Vacuum Cups/Suction Grippers: For flat-surfaced parts.

    • Pneumatic or Electric Grippers/Jaws: For parts requiring clamping.

    • Custom Tooling.

  3. Vacuum Generation Unit: Vacuum ejector or pump if suction is used.

  4. Robot Controller.

IV. Control & Electrical Module

  1. Master Controller: Usually a PLC, synchronizing the platform, vision, and robot.

  2. Communication Interface: Facilitates data exchange between PLC, vision, and robot.

  3. Electrical Cabinet: Houses circuit breakers, relays, power supplies, servo drives, etc.

  4. Human-Machine Interface: Touchscreen for parameter setting, monitoring, and manual operation.

V. Auxiliary & Structural Module

  1. Machine Frame: Supports and aligns all components.

  2. Safety Guarding: Protective covers or light curtains.

  3. Loading Mechanism (Optional): Automated device to pour bulk parts onto the tray.

  4. Output/Transfer Guide: Channels for moving picked parts to the next station.

  5. Cabling & Pneumatic Lines: Wires, cables, and air hoses connecting all components.

Summary: A flexible feeder is a sophisticated system integrating vibration, vision, robotics, and control. Its components are configured around the core workflow of “scatter, identify, and pick” to perform intelligent parts feeding.
